Casino Bound Bus Crashes In Connecticut

Tuesday, February 9th, 2016

A bus carrying upwards of 70 people flipped off of Interstate 95 in Connecticut during a snow storm that struck the northeast on Monday, February 8, 2016. At least 30 passengers were injured, several critically, but miraculously none were killed. The bus, owned by Dahlia Inc., and operated by VMC East Coast, left from New York City and was travelling toward the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville when the accident occurred. Emergency crews shut down the highway down for almost 4 1/2 hours before it reopened around 5 p.m., in time for the evening rush.

Ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Early reports indicate that the majority of the passengers were able to walk off the bus on their own, but some of the patients were critical and transported to the trauma center at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Connecticut State Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash and Gov. Dannel Malloy issued a statement saying his office is closely following the situation and prioritizing public safety. Eyewitnesses suggest that the bus’ excessive speed was to blame for the accident. The driver is expected to be intensely questioned about the crash. His responses and the eventual forensic analysis will likely determine how and why this serious bus crash occurred.

An accident of this nature is a reminder that drivers, particularly those in large passenger vehicles and buses, to whom passengers entrust their lives, need to be mindful of their surroundings, especially in inclement weather. Every driver is responsible for the safety of fellow motorists, and is required to be mindful of their surroundings, even in snowy and icy conditions.
