A construction worker was killed and another one was seriously injured after the inside of a building collapsed during a demolition project in midtown Manhattan. The fatal accident continues a frightening rash of deadly accidents that are plaguing the city. The flurry of serious accidents comes as new construction projects continue to pop up all over the five boroughs.
Reports indicate that a large section of a ceiling collapsed on top of the two workers, pinning them to the ground at the renovation project of a posh Hotel. The hotel, projected to be a 27-story building but currently an 8-story structure, has been under renovation for almost 3 years. Filings indicate that the developers anticipate calling the hotel ‘The Aloft New York Midtown Hotel.’
Emergency personnel raced to the scene on the crowded block located on W. 38th St. between 5th and 6th Avenues earlier this morning and dug out the 2 victims. One of the victims was pronounced dead and the other was rushed to a local hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.
