Bad Weekend for NYC Traffic Crashes

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

The weekend of September 12-13, 2015, was a deadly one for New Yorkers. Three people lost their lives in traffic accidents. One of them occurred on City Island, another in Brooklyn and the third in the Bronx. In addition, a woman in East Elmhurst was critically injured by a drunk driver while crossing the street.

The City Island incident occurred when a woman who was bicycling home to Soundview and was crossing the City Island bridge around 11:45 PM. According to witnesses, she was hit by the driver of a 2015 white Hyundai Genesis who was going in the same direction as the victim. The driver fled the scene and was not identified.

The woman, who had emigrated from Mexico more than 10 years ago, had left her job for the night and was bicycling home. The City Island Bridge is under construction and there is no shoulder on the roadway, forcing bicycles, pedestrians and motor vehicles to share the space.

In addition to the death on City Island, two motorcyclists died that weekend. One fatality occurred when a motorcyclist steered his cycle between a van moving along and cars parked on the street, Parkside Avenue near Park Circle in Brooklyn. Another rider was killed when he drove his motorcycle into a fence on Commerce Avenue in the Bronx, killing his unidentified passenger. According to a story in the New York Post, the driver was going well over the 25 mph speed limit.

In addition to the fatal accidents that weekend, a woman was critically injured while crossing the street in East Elmhurst in Queens. She was outside the sidewalk on Astoria Boulevard when struck by a 52-year-old driver who was later charged with driving drunk.
