Pedestrian Killed by Semi Truck in Glendale

Thursday, October 23rd, 2014

The New York lawyers at Block O’Toole & Murphy are all too aware of the perils associated with tractor-trailer accidents. Too often they result in death. Today, media outlets are reporting that a pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor trailer in the Glendale section of Queens. The male pedestrian was 46.

The details about the circumstances of the accident are still emerging but this much remains clear: The tractor trailer was making a left-hand turn and struck the pedestrian as the pedestrian was crossing the street. The victim was rushed by emergency personnel to Elmhurst Hospital in Queens where doctors and nurses tried to stave off death. Tragically, the man was pronounced dead.

Most importantly, our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and those who loved him. This is precisely the type of tragedy that Mayor DeBlasio’s “Vision Zero” program hopes to eliminate. We hope the family and friends of the victim can summon the strength to move forward in their own lives.

Tractor-trailer collisions are inherently dangerous because of the size of the truck and the force it exerts when it is involved in an impact. Motorists, passengers and pedestrians are all at risk when a truck is not operated safely. Such collisions are not uncommon in New York City, particularly because of the crowded and narrow streets that truck drivers are forced to navigate. We as New Yorkers must all remain vigilant in trying to curtail the number of serious accidents involving tractor-trailers and large trucks.
