Today an MTA track worker was severely burned in an electrical explosion while working underground in the subway system. The worker was part of a crew doing maintenance work on the Lexington Avenue line, on Manhattan’s east side. The worker suffered severe burns after inadvertently coming into contact the track’s 3rd rail. Three other workers were also injured.
The accident took place at 3:30 AM when a cable came into contact with the live third rail. The contact triggered an electrical blast, burning the worker’s face, neck and legs. There is an ongoing investigation into why this workplace accident took place.
There are some questions that need to be answered:
(1) Where did the cable come from?
(2) If, as reported, the line was out of service – did the 3rd rail need to be live at the time the work was being performed?
(3) Were the workers informed that the 3rd rail was live?
