Child Killed Outside of School

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

A girl was killed and nine others injured when a car jumped the curb in front of a Bronx elementary school in Kingsbridge. The vehicle, a Honda Accord, was driven by a 55-year-old woman when it went into reverse in front of PS 307 at 124 Eames Place and drove onto the sidewalk, where children and adults were gathered around the school entrance.

The girl, who was eight years old and a third-grade student at the school, was taken by ambulance to St. Barnabas Hospital where she died about an hour later. Many students and parents were standing on the sidewalk outside the school, which was being dismissed for the day. Students were taken back into the school building so they would not have to watch.

One news report said that the driver of the Honda was attempting to park in front of the school when the she lost control while backing into a space and went onto the sidewalk at a high rate of speed. The driver then apparently tried to drive forward, hitting more people on the sidewalk.

Of those taken to area hospitals, three reportedly had serious injuries but were expected to survive. Ambulances took other victims to Jacobi Hospital in addition to going to St. Barnabas.

After the accident, the driver attempted to leave the scene on foot, but was restrained by shocked passersby. The news report suggested that the driver could have been attacked by the parents on the sidewalk after she tried to leave the scene but another parent restrained the crowd.

No charges were filed against the driver of the Honda as of last Saturday
