The attorneys at Block O’Toole & Murphy are following a serious bus accident that occurred yesterday in midtown Manhattan. The story is still unfolding. For the latest, read below.

A private charter bus that had just dropped off passengers at New York’s Port Authority terminal crushed two unsuspecting tourists from Spain near the intersection of 47th Street and 10th Avenue in the Hells Kitchen section of Manhattan. The victims were spending their final day of a New York vacation, hoping to soak in as many sights as possible. They began the day early, seeking to add to a lifetime of memories. Instead, they now face what is a lifetime of pain and anguish.

The women, an aunt and her niece, were reportedly crossing 47th Street at 10th Avenue. The bus was turning on to 10th Avenue, traveling uptown. It is not clear whether the victims were in the crosswalk or whether they had the right of way. What is obvious is that the bus driver failed to see the victims, striking both and pinning one of them under the bus’ wheel. The aunt, 62, was laying, helpless, under the driver side front wheel, frantic, in obvious agony. Her niece, also laying in the street, was desperately screaming for help after seeing her aunt’s badly mangled leg. Local merchants, residents and people who worked in the area rushed to the scene to comfort the victims. It was a difficult scene for even the witnesses with blood splashed all over the pavement. Emergency personnel raced to the scene and took the victims away in separate ambulances. They were rushed to local hospitals and are currently receiving treatment. Doctors are trying to save the aunt’s leg.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones. Enduring a life-changing injury is extremely challenging. To do it in a foreign country only makes the challenge that much more daunting. Potential language barriers, housing issues, an absence of family and friends, medical care in a foreign country and insurance issues can make a recovery even more difficult. We hope the spirit of New York helps these two reach a fast and healthy recovery.

Bus accidents frequently occur and when they do the consequences are usually very serious. There is no such thing as a minor bus accident when you are on the receiving end of it. New Yorkers and visitors all need to be mindful of this as we navigate our town. Pedestrians, other motorists and passengers on a bus have a right to bring a lawsuit if they were injured as a result of the negligence of a bus driver. You should consider consulting with an experienced bus accident attorney if you have been seriously injured in a bus accident.
