Driver Caught Reading While Driving A Bus

Wednesday, July 9th, 2014

The New York City lawyers at Block O’Toole & Murphy have repeatedly written about the perils of distracted driving. Distracted driving is not something we expect from our public employees – – certainly not a bus driver while he is operating a bus filled with passengers. Still, a bus driver was caught reading Tuesday morning while driving more than 40 passengers on his New Jersey Transit bus. Stunned, frightened passengers snapped photographs, catching the reckless driver in the act.

The driver was on Route 80 heading eastbound in Wayne, New Jersey. He was reading a pamphlet which amazingly was part of him planning a vacation. Then, the reckless driver, pulled out a hardcover book and was reading it while driving the bus, according to witnesses on the bus. This all happened during the morning rush hour and lasted for more than 10 minutes.

Distracted driving is a leading cause of serious motor vehicle accidents. The consequences can be lethal when a bus driver is carrying passengers and the driver is distracted from the serious job of safely driving the bus. Any driver who exposes passengers, other motorists and pedestrians to these risks has no business being on the road, never mind being a public bus driver. Lives are at stake and distracted driving needs to be dramatically reduced to lessen the incidence of bus accidents and any motor vehilce crash.

The law firm of Block O’Toole & Murphy is committed to helping serious accident victims. The trial lawyers at the firm have recovered more than $750,000,000 in verdicts and settlements on behalf of their clients.
