Report Indicates Fatal NYC Bus Crashes Are on the Rise

The lawyers at Block O’Toole & Murphy have frequently been asked to represent victims in serious New York City bus crashes. Just because of the sheer size of a bus and the limited safety features for passengers, bus accidents can often be some of the most dangerous accidents. Accordingly, it is critical to make the streets safer and limit the number of bus accidents. This includes better training for drivers, advanced technology to reduce the likelihood of accidents and an emphasis on safety within the MTA from the top down.

However, a new study shows that number of recent deadly bus accidents has soared to unprecedented levels. Last year, ten people were killed in collisions, a 25% increase from the year before. You would think the focus would be on improvement and the statistics would reflect that in 2014. However, five people died in bus accidents in just the first two-and-a-half months of 2014, more than were killed in all of 2011. If the city maintains the current pace, there would be 24 deaths as a result of bus crashes by the end of this year

“This trend is downright frightening, ” said lawyer Jeffrey A. Block of Block O’Toole & Murphy, LLP. “The MTA and the mayor need to corral this problem because it is out of control,” he added. These studies are more astounding because they come shortly after Mayor Bill DeBlasio rolled out his ambitious “Vision Zero” plan that he hoped would reduce traffic fatalities in New York City to zero.

We recently penned a piece on the tragic accident of 21 year-old victim Marisol Martinez. Martinez was reportedly mowed down by a city bus as she walked in the crosswalk with the right of way. Her family and families all over New York City are mourning senseless death after senseless death because somehow the city and the MTA have lost their ability to control the safe operation of city buses. Something needs to change.

The attorneys at Block O’Toole & Murphy have represented many victims in bus collisions. For instance, they secured a $6,000,000 settlement, a $3,000,000 settlement and a $2,056,656 verdict for victims in New York City bus accidents. They have also amassed a record of more than $750,000,000 in verdicts and settlements for their clients. Look at www.blockotoole.com to learn more about these experienced attorneys.
