A driver who killed a 25-year-old pedestrian in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn will not be ticketed or charged, according to NYPD, according to Streetsblog. The young man, originally from the Urkraine, was a rabbinical student at a Yeshiva in New Jersey. Although he was in the crosswalk and had the right of way, no law enforcement action will be taken as a result of the pedestrian accident.
He was hit at the corner of Carroll Street and Kingston Avenue around 9 AM. He was apparently in the crosswalk when he was hit by a city sanitation truck. He had the walk signal when he stepped into the crosswalk, according to friends with him at the time.
He was hit by the front side of the truck, and then run over by its rear wheels. According to news sources, the driver said he didn’t see the pedestrian before turning. Two other pedestrians were injured in the incident.
If implemented, Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan to eliminate pedestrian accidents and deaths would include increased visibility in vehicles in the city fleet, enhanced driver training and devices to record speed.
The accident occurred in the 71st precinct, where officers wrote 161 speeding tickets and cited 268 drivers for failure to yield to pedestrians in 2013. So far this year, the precinct has issued 14 speeding tickets and 32 failure to yield summonses.
