Pedro Santiago Killed in Manhattan Bicycle Accident by City Bus

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2014

Pedro Santiago, a 45 year-old Manhattan bicyclist, was killed after being pinned under a New York City bus in the Harlem section of Manhattan yesterday. The accident took place on West 125th Street near Lenox Avenue. It continues an epidemic of traffic fatalities in New York City.

Mr. Santiago was hit and trapped under the midsection of a double-length B15 bus. Emergency personnel used air bags to lift the bus off of his body. Witnesses described a gruesome scene as emergency workers tried to save Mr. Santiago, likening his body to a “crumpled up pretzel.” He was rushed to Harlem Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Santiago’s family, friends and loved ones. We hope they have the strength to carry on.

The cause of this collision is still being investigated. Hopefully, the accident investigators reach a fairminded and just conclusion about how and why this happened. Perhaps it will lead to better safety precautions in the future. Still, a life – – a too young life – – has been lost. The rash of traffic fatalities in New York City has increased media and political attention on the issue. Local politicians, including Mayor DeBlasio, are making traffic safety a big part of their political platform. Hopefully, solutions are on the horizon. Too many lives are lost as our city searches for answers.
