Even minor New York car accidents can lead to something worse for all involved, as illustrated by a recent Brooklyn incident. The driver of an SUV was arrested after he left the scene of an accident last Friday and crashed into an apartment building. The result: 16 people were forced to evacuate while law enforcement and safety officials tried to figure out how to get the car out of the building safely.
The driver of the SUV was charged with criminal mischief and reckless endangerment. According to police, he sped off after a fender-bender at Broadway and Jefferson in Bedford-Stuyvesant when the other driver asked him to wait for police.
It turns out that the SUV driver had a suspended license.
The other driver pursued the SUV and was behind it when it crashed into a building on Marion Street around 2:40 P.M. Witnesses say that the other driver dragged the SUV driver out of the vehicle and began beating him. The SUV driver, whose grandchildren live in the building, sustained minor injuries.
It was not clear when the eight families forced to leave their homes would be able to return.
