Large increase in injuries to construction workers reported as a result of a significant incline in workplace accidents

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2013

Federal Bureau of Labor statistics show an alarming increase in the number of construction accidents between 2011 and 2012, resulting in more injured workers in New York City. During this time period construction accidents at New York City construction sites increased by 31%, with a reported 46% increase in injuries to workers.

During this same time period, the number of government inspectors has been significantly reduced, leaving construction companies to police themselves with respect to worksite safety. By failing to perform diligent inspections at construction sites in order to detect dangerous conditions and by failing to correct these unsafe conditions, construction companies are putting profit ahead of worker safety. The result is an increase in accidents and injuries to the hardworking men and women that are building our city. Yet, amazingly, despite the alarming statistics, there are still naysayers out there that are seeking to restrict the laws that protect our workers.
