Construction Worker Dies First Day on Job

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

A construction worker fell to his death while working on an exterior renovation project in SoHo, tragically capping off what was reportedly his first day of work. According to NBC New York, the worker was identified as 28-year-old Adrien Zamora, who was from Ditmas Park in Brooklyn. Reportedly, Zamora was working on scaffolding three stories up when he fell to his death. The accident occurred at a site where a low-rise luxury building is being renovated at 450 Broome St., near Mercer.

It has been reported that the worker was preparing to head home after his first day of work when he reached over the railing to turn over a plank and fell. The Office of Emergency Management has said that Zamora landed on a sidewalk construction shed, and that he was not wearing a harness at the time. EMS workers did CPR and he was taken to Bellevue Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Zamora leaves behind a wife and two children.

Bras-Al Construction Corp. is running the renovation project. Zamora s accident and untimely death comes just four months after one of the site s contractors was cited for “failure to safeguard all person and property after a wrench fell eight stories onto a pedestrian. After the most recent accident, the NYC Department of Buildings issued a stop work order for the site. The accident occurred in the SoHo area, which is an area of Lower Manhattan that stands for “South of Houston (Street).

Due to the use of hazardous materials, large machinery, and the nature of the construction industry, many construction sites are inherently dangerous for crews, bystanders, and rescuers. Construction accidents can be extremely serious, leading to debilitating injuries, long-term health problems, and even death. Legal recourse may be available, however, to employees or bystanders who were injured as the result of a negligent contractor, building owner, or other party. If you or a loved one is injured in a construction accident, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your injuries, medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
