The Long Island car accident lawyers at Block O’Toole and Murphy would like to address a growing problem in the area: wrong-way drunk driving and driving under the influence of drugs. November and December of 2010 made for an especially traumatic time for these types of Long Island accidents, boasting no less than seven of them in the space of a month.
The last of these incidents was allegedly caused by a Miller Place man who was high on heroin and in possession of the substance while driving on Route 25, according to the Long Island Press. He reportedly collided head-on into a pickup truck and an SUV on the other side of double-yellow lines. The accident came on the heels of six other drunk driving wrong-way accidents, the first of which resulted in the death of a police officer. The other incidents occurred on the Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway, and Hempstead Turnpike.
The prevalence of the incidents caused Suffolk County officials to call for more check points and debut an anti-DWI campaign for the holiday season.
